Loadit Launched

A ustralia's leading CD and DVD retailer, Sanity Entertainment is waging all out war with Apple's iTunes by launching it's own music subscription service.

With every major record label's entire digital catalogue at the customer's disposal, it's a fairly big move for this relatively small company.

Along with rivalling their collection, the Loadit music store as it's called, is also undercutting iTunes' prices by massive amounts. For about €20 a month you can download as many as 300 songs to three registered computers and two MP3 players. That works out at about 7c a track compared to iTune's 99c.

Tony Quinn who manages Loadit Ltd is pretty confident it'll catch on "If this proposition is presented to the customer in a way that makes sense, they'll take it on," Quinn said. "The solution will come through education at retail. [Consumers] understand the concept of [subscribing to] pay TV and magazines, so why not for music?"

And if it does catch on, Sanity are ready to offer the service through kiosks at their retail stores and have also signed a deal with Fujifilm to offer the service at pver 6000 digital photo printing machines all over Australia.

Also on their side are the Bill Gates and the boys and girls at Windows. Loadit will be standard on the Windows Media Player 11 ensuring the company millions of potential customers. However, it's not all great news as the service will not be offered to those of us reading this on a Mac. Restrictions on the technology mean it's unavailable to Mac and iPod users. Somehow I don't think anyone over at Apple HQ will be getting too worried just yet!

Your Own Block Rockin' Beats The Chemical Brothers promote Brotherhood with worldwide video project

After 16 years together and nine million in album sales, the Chemical Brothers have finally gone global. The duo will soon pinpoint big-beat fanatics around the world with a new online-media project that invites fans to submit videos and photos to be tacked onto a giant Google Earth map. The theme, "Midnight Madness," is inspired by the group's similarly named new single and video — which, consequently, features the breakdancing of a particularly flexible goblin.

The best submissions will be combined into a video set debuting the week of September 1 in conjunction with the release of Brotherhood — a two-disc greatest-hits compilation. The first disc contains 14 singles and new tune "Keep My Composure," featuring Spank Rock. Like the earlier singles collection, however, it's a bit thin on material from the group's first two LPs. The other disc compiles the duo's "Electronic Battle Weapons" — rare experimental tracks that have formed the basis of many of the Brothers' songs.

Future Chemical Brothers Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons first crossed paths in 1989 in Manchester, a city whose storied musical history attracted the omnivorous music fans. Originally DJing and recording under the name the Dust Brothers — a tribute to the famous Paul's Boutique producers, who sued to force a name change — they fused house, hip-hop, rock, and dance for a big-beat sound. Albums like Exit Planet Dust and Dig Your Own Hole swiftly propelled the group from underground clubs into album charts and arenas. With "Midnight Madness" they'll be re-entering the atmosphere of Planet Google.

Amsterdam Dance Event 2008 announces initial lineup

Henrik Schwarz, Armin Van Buuren, Dennis Ferrer, Erick Morillo, and Francois K are among the hundreds of artists confirmed to play at this year's Amsterdam Dance Event.

An electronic music conference and festival, the ADE has grown to become one of the industry's most important events. Last year was such a success, in fact, that the organizers decided to add an extra day to the festivities to accommodate all the acts that will be playing throughout the city in clubs like Escape, Melkweg, Panama, and Paradiso.

Big names in nearly every genre you could imagine will be represented, including house (Schwarz / Âme / Dixon live, Layo & Bushwacka!, Robert Owens), trance (Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk), and minimal (Richie Hawtin, Kabale Und Liebe, Daze Maxim). RA will be adding the individual events to their database in the next few days, so keep an eye out for your favorite act playing this October 22nd, 23rd, 24th, or 25th in Amsterdam. Chances are, they've already been booked.

‘Nuisance’ bar closed! It’s the last dance for Studio B

A Banker Street nightclub recently condemned by the local community board has now been shut down by the Department of Buildings — but club lawyer Ken Fisher says the club has fixed whatever led to the failed inspection.

City documents did not reveal the specific offenses that caused Studio B’s closure, but the Department of Buildings did on July 31 revoke the club’s permit to host large crowds indoors, effectively shutting down the venue.

Fisher (pictured) was steadfast about Studio B’s readiness to reopen when, and if, Department of Buildings inspectors make a return visit.

“All of the concerns have been met and we’re waiting for further inspections,” said Fisher, a well-connected former city councilman.

As a result of the closure, Studio B shows between July 31 and at least Aug. 19 have been relocated to different venues (locations remain to be announced; check Studio B’s Web site for updates).

As The Brooklyn Paper has reported, Studio B has come under fire in recent weeks by Greenpoint residents who say the club, which is between Calyer Street and Meserole Avenue, is too noisy, doesn’t control its customers and built a second floor addition without a permit.

While residents were pleased with the brief respite form Studio B’s allegedly illegal antics, Greenpointer Glen Radecki said he didn’t hold any grudges.

“It’s gratifying to know we won’t have any problems for a while,” said Radecki, who lives one block away. “But it’s not as if I’m wishing the club disappeared off the face of the earth forever. I look forward to see what’s going to happen next.”

Martijn Ten Velden Announces Debut North American Tour

Martijn 'ten out of ten' Velden, a Don in his own right, announces his debut North American tour this Summer.
Martijn ten Velden has established himself as a leading DJ/producer on an international level, playing his signature twisted, electro, minimal sets to crowds all over the world. He’s rocked legendary dance floors including Renaissance in London, Redlight in Paris, Peppermint in Dubai, as well as Godskitchen and Ministry of Sound.

And if you can’t find Martijn rocking the roofs off a nightclub, then you’ll find him in the studio, producing and remixing a string of today’s dance hits. Responsible for chart-toppers including “I Wish You Would” which became a huge anthem in Ibiza during Summer 2006 and 2007, as well as Martijn’s recently released remix on Defected Records, the Shapeshifters remake of Orbital’s classic anthem “Chime”.

Successful partnerships with Mark Knight for Toolroom Records, and most recently Splittr, collaboration with Mark Yardley from the Stanton Warriors, prove how innovative and evolving Martijn’s work can be. This has earned him the respect and support from jocks like Roger Sanchez, Deep Dish and Steve Lawler. So it comes as no surprise that Martijn was nominated for 'Best Artist' and 'Outstanding Remix' at 2007’s House Music Awards. Winter Music Conference 2008 also saw Martijn’s compilation ‘Toolroom Knights Vol 1’ on Toolroom Records up for nomination at the 2008 IDMA Awards, for ‘Best Compilation’ which was up against MOS The Annual and Ultra Dance 08 on Ultra Records.

Keen to keep his name in the headlines, Martijn now spends most of his time working on solo productions and remixes, as well as touring worldwide. Next stop - North America…look out for Martijn ten Velden at a venue near you!
